Each year, our own Diana White travels to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to source goods made by local villagers to sell at an annual Christmas bazaar and cocktail party for Kampuchea House, a home for orphans and deserted children in Cambodia.  This year, APSM donated the use of our hall for this event.  It was a very popular event!

APSM has recently received some images belonging to the grandson of Charles Stamper – a member of Albert Park in the 1899-1900 season.

Charles was a member of both the Albert Park Champion Eight of that season, as well as the winning Inter-colonial Eight-Oared Race.  Many thanks to Peter Stamper and Andrew Guerin for sharing these with us!

On November 18, APSM welcomed our 1956 Olympians to morning tea at the clubhouse.  John Cockbill, Bob Duncan and Ian Allen came along with Joyce Dickson and Judy Cockbill.  Our King’s Cup rowers Don Christie and Max Shaw – now our longest surviving member, having joined in 1946 – came as well.

Ian brought along his own photographs of the 1956 Games to share with the club, and we discovered that John Cockbill’s grandfather Jack was a member of the 1900 Victorian crew for the Intercolonial Eight-Oared Race.

Images of this earlier crew form part of the Charles Stamper collection, which were donated to the club earlier this year.

On Saturday, October 6 2012, a group of APSM rowers flew up to Mildura to take part in the 21st annual Flying Doctor Rowathon on the Murray River.  Our crew competed over the gruelling 82km course which started at Wentworth District Rowing Club in ideal conditions while wearing black wings to symbolise Albert Park Lake’s beautiful Australian black swans.

Our ladies raised over $5000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and feature in the 2012 promotional video!

Crew photos can be found here and here.

In the lead up to the 2012 London Games, the Footy Show came to APSM for the Olympic Challenge.  Nick Gall and Simon Gadsden brought the team from Rowing Victoria on a very cold Thursday morning to set up the course and show the boys how to scull.  It all went very swimmingly – they fell in a lot – but fortunately we’ve got very hot water in our showers!

The 2012 Victoria University River Run is a 5 or 10 km twilight run/walk held along the Maribyrnong River.  This event raises funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital, and this year’s charity is the PNET Cancer Foundation, set up by our very own rowers Kerry Morrison and Bill Stark.  Kerry and Bill’s son Kieran Stark – an avid rower for Xavier College and Mercantile – sadly passed away from a PNET brain tumour 2 days before his 21st birthday in 2008 after coaching his Melbourne Rowing Club crew earlier in the day.

This year’s run will be held on Saturday, 17th March, starting at 5.30pm at the Coulson Gardens.  It will be a fantastic opportunity to continue training during the Grand Prix week in preparation for our regatta in April.  You can also join Kerry and Bill afterwards at the Angler’s Tavern near the finish line for dinner and celebrations.

Further information about the River Run can be found on the Everyday Hero website.  For more information about Kieran, please visit the PNET Cancer Foundation website.
